ChatGPT for Beginners — How to Get Started

ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI tools, and it’s free. Here’s how to get started.

Create an account

Go to chatgpt.com. You can sign in with a Google account, Microsoft account, or email.

The free version is enough for most people. The paid version offers faster responses and access to newer features, but isn’t necessary for beginners.

Write your first message

Once you’re logged in, you’ll see a text field. Type anything.

Try these:

  • “Hi! Can you help me write a birthday invitation?”
  • “What’s the best way to learn a new language?”
  • “Explain to me why the sky is blue”

Be specific

ChatGPT’s quality depends on how well you instruct it (called a prompt).

Bad: “Write an email.”

Good: “I’m a salesperson. Write a polite email to a customer telling them their order is delayed and offering a 10% discount on their next order.”

The more context you give, the better the answer. This is a whole art form of its own — prompting.

Have a conversation, don’t just ask once

This is where most people get stuck: they ask one question, get an answer, and stop.

You can ask for changes: “That was good, but make it shorter.” Or “Change the tone to be more casual.” Or “Add one more paragraph about sustainability.”

This back-and-forth refining is where AI truly shines.

A word of caution

AI can give you incorrect information — it may invent things that sound perfectly natural and confident while being completely made up. Don’t feed it sensitive information, conversations aren’t fully private. And always verify facts, especially around health, money, or legal matters.

You’ll learn the most by experimenting, so go try it!
