Targeted Ads for AI Bots
AI processes billions of web pages to learn. But what if some of that content is actually hidden ads?
What Happened?
In August 2026, it was discovered that some major websites — including Time magazine — show different content to AI bots than to humans.
When a human opens a page, they see a normal article. But when an AI crawler (such as OpenAI’s or Google’s) fetches the same page, it receives a version with added promotional text. This text praises a specific product or brand in a positive tone.
AI reads this text, stores it in its memory — and the next time someone asks the AI for an opinion about that brand, the AI may repeat that positive message.
Why Does This Exist?
Two forces are at play:
1. AI bots strain websites. A large portion of traffic on major websites is now AI bots crawling pages to train language models. This creates real server costs for publishers.
2. AI takes away readers. When Google or ChatGPT answers a question directly without sending users to the original site, publishers lose visitors and ad revenue.
Hidden ads are publishers’ way of benefiting from bot traffic: if they must give content to AI, at least they can get something in return.
How It Works in Practice
German developer Vincent Schmalbach tested this by loading a Time article first in a browser, then through AI services. The human version was a normal article. The AI version contained markdown-formatted ad text about American virtual bank Ally Bank.
The ad was placed by ad tech company Mobian. The idea is that when AI learns to read positive things about a company from trusted sites, it begins recommending that company when answering user questions. Time’s owner, Salesforce founder Marc Benioff, even commented on it publicly — according to him, the number of ad impressions from AI bots has already surpassed those from human visitors on Time.
What Does This Mean for You?
AI recommendations aren’t always based purely on quality. When you ask AI something like “what’s the best virtual bank” or “which phone should I buy,” the answer may be driven by paid content.
How to be cautious:
- Compare sources. Don’t settle for AI’s answer — check multiple sources.
- Ask why. If AI recommends a specific product, ask why that one specifically and what alternatives exist.
- Remember AI doesn’t always know it’s reading an ad. It processes all text the same way.
- Be extra careful with financial advice. Always verify money-related tips from independent sources.
The Future
This is just the beginning. We’ll likely see:
- Countermeasures from AI companies — OpenAI, Google, and others will try to detect and filter out hidden ads
- A new industry — “AI optimization” is the new SEO (search engine optimization)
- Regulation — covert advertising is illegal in many countries when targeting consumers, but ads aimed at AI exist in a gray area
Meanwhile, some companies are already designing their websites specifically for AI bots — trying to influence what ChatGPT and similar services say about them.
Summary
AI is the new advertising platform. When AI reads information from the internet, some of it may be paid recommendations hidden within normal articles. This doesn’t mean you can’t trust AI — but it means critical thinking is more important than ever.
Same rule as always: always check the background of the information you receive.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI recommendations be influenced by ads?↓
Yes, at least in theory. If AI reads positive text about a brand on a website, it may start recommending it. This is a new form of marketing sometimes called AI optimization.
Does AI know it's reading an ad?↓
Not always. If the ad is written as regular text and not labeled as an advertisement, AI can't distinguish it from other content.
Should I be worried about this?↓
Not as such, but it's worth being aware of. When AI recommends a product or service, the recommendation may not be based purely on quality but possibly on paid content.
How can I check if an AI recommendation is reliable?↓
Ask AI why it recommends this particular option, and compare with multiple sources. Don't rely solely on AI for important purchasing decisions.
